Villa Sandnes

A house turned inward, organised entirely around a courtyard. With no corridors, every room is reached around the court, so the centre of the house is also the way through it. A circular opening in the roof tracks the sun across the day, and the shadow it casts moves over the walls and floor like a slow clock, keeping the interior in contact with the hour, the weather and the season.

Brick grounds the house: external walls, paving and the courtyard floor are laid in the same brick, carried unbroken across the threshold into the timber interior. Inside, raw concrete ceilings sit over smooth wooden floors and cabinetry, heavy against light, and perforated timber screens with generous glazing break the daylight into patterns that shift through the day. Texture does the work that decoration would otherwise do.
